INDUSTRIAL KEYWORD DOMAINS
Your choice of domain name can play a important role in determining search engine ranking for your website. The option of registering an "industrial keyword domain" (IKD - my own abbreviation) can be a smart move - particularly for a smaller business or startup enterprise.
The idea or theory behind using an IKD is that you are matching (closely or perfectly) the common keywords used in the search engines for your particular product or service.
Let's say you are a selling widgets exclusively in Ohio. The name of your company is Yellow Dog LLC.
So?
When it comes to registering a domain your first instinct is... YellowDog.com. It just makes sense.
However, the key domain indicators - in our example - are the words "yellow" and "dog." Your key products are "widgets" and you are located in "Ohio."
There is nothing wrong with using YellowDog.com.
On the other hand, if you were to use the IKD "OhioWidgets.com" chances are you would be Page One on the search engines in fairly short order. If you were to depend on YellowDog.com... it would still be possible but it could take some addition time, effort and expense.
Industrial Keyword Domains are not foolproof. There are instances where they can backfire on your objective.
Industrial or trade-specific domain names are - a very least - something to give look at when considering a domain name and potential advantages in page/site ranking.
