WEBSITE LAYOUT & DESIGN

Having established our preliminary objectives, having gathered the content to be included, and deciding on the size (number of pages) for the website - it's time to actually build a website.

Choosing A Successful Domain Name
This is an essential - a domain name can help or hinder the growth, accessibility and success of a site. By law no one can copyright a domain name - but it is a good idea to avoid a name that may eventually lead to unnecessary conflict in the future. On the other hand - you can trademark a domain name if it is used for commerce. What is important is that a domain name is relevent and significant to your business or organization.

If you already have a registered domain name, simply move on to the next step. If you need assistance and information about how to choose a domain name and how to register it - give a call. A simple rule of thumb is to choose a name that is appropriate and specific. If you had a window cleaning business in Litchfield, Connecticut - choosing a domain name like "WonderfulWindows.com" might seem appealing, but if you chose "LitchfieldWindowCleaning.com" you would likely rank Page One, Number One on Google and the rest of the search engines. It's something to think about.

PSD Renderings
Each site designed by New Milford Web Design starts with a PSD (Photoshop) rendering of how the home page and site navigation will eventually look and work. It is a concise graphic representation of the site's main page which shows the site's basic components and how the navigation of the site pages will work. A PSD-file also portrays the "character" of the site itself - formal, casual, industrial, whimsical, etc. - and color schemes. Before creating a PSD, I often ask clients to search the web looking for examples of sites which they feel represents how they would like their site to look. These "sample sites" do not necessarily have to be in the same category as the site itself. The main focus is that I have an idea of your vision of what the site should look like.

HTML Layouts
With approval of a final PSD rendering, the final phase of the work begins. The graphic PSD-file is "sliced" into useable html components. Typestyles are chosen. Main pages are rendered in html with text and images added. Subordinate pages may need to be designed. All New Milford Web Design sites are built in basic html. This allows for near-perfect cross-browser compatibility and precision placement of page elements. It also tends to fare very favorably with the search engines - normally initial indexing begins as soon a week or two after a site launch without having to submit the site to the engines. Throughout the building process you will be able to watch progress on an assigned URL.

Launching A Site
Once the site is completed, you will be asked to give it a final review and approval. At that point it is simply a matter of loading the pages to a designated server and the site is up and running. New Milford Web Design offers additional site maintenance and development services. I encourage you to browse these services and give a call or send an email if you have any questions regarding them.
