DECIDING ON OBJECTIVES
Reviewing and establishing your goals is the essential first step in building any website. Although the size (i.e. page count) of a website does not necessarily command it's utility, the two generally do go hand-in-hand. The world wide web is a big place - giving due consideration to your competition should play a part in determining realistic goals. Whether your site products, services, or information are local, national or international also plays a part in determining objectives.
Listing/Directory Website
For some businesses, the need for a website is akin to having a online business card - you want people to be able to reference your essentials: business hours, telephone number, fax, location (directions), and personnel/product/services information. This is usually a basic site averaging around 3-pages. It can be very effective and serve the needs of a business or organization. This type of site can also be expanded in the future. Although a "business card site" will not normally gain or sustain organic rank in the search engines without significant and relevant content, it can achieve very positive results via traditional media and self-promotion (particularly taking advantage of services similar to Google's Small Business/Places Directory Listings). ref. Small Business Website
A small business website usually includes 5-8 pages of descriptive content, photographs/graphics and gives details about your goods/services or organization. Very often this is the starting point for a business that is interested in expanding current advertising and marketing with an online presence, or replacing traditional print/media promotions. It is expandable and significant search engine analytics are attainable within 3-4 months when incorporating a basic organic SEO-strategy into the site build. This type of site may include adding (or revising) content on a regular basis, a more dynamic SEO-development program, content expansion and ongoing development. A small business website can, as well, simply serve as an expanded listing/directory site.
Small Commerce Website
Selling online is attractive. Being paid for goods and services via the internet opens markets that where unimaginable just a few years ago. Selling your product line, merchandise and/or services "to the world" (as well as your local neighborhood) can open many doors of opportunity and financial advantage. Currently, New Milford Web Design exclusively designs commerce sites which use the PayPal© Shopping Cart Gateway - generally this involves a limited product line (under 50 items) and is an administered format (i.e. no CMS). PayPal's fees, convenience and practicality make them very positive choice for commerce. Keep in mind, online PayPal billing is available for "Services Rendered" as well as goods. This can be very attractive to small businesses that would like to explore credit card payments without getting overly involved in long-term fees and commitments. This type of site is normally an enhanced version of the small business website.
